. I was looking at the biography notes for John Beagan and seen that the two people listed next to him (John Biggin) are Cassisys and Martins. This is interesting because there was a Patrick Martin and a Peter Cassidy who both lived next to him in Donagh.
Patrick Martin is supposed to have been from County Monaghan but I never seen any mention of where Peter Cassidy was from. There might not be any connection but it sure is a strong coincidence. Danny

The oral history of Alvin Beagan recalls a family story of the first Beagan comming to PEI aboard a schooner from Newfoundland and being forced by ice to winter over on the Hillsboro River. Having relatives nearby he stayed with them and brought his own family over the following spring.
Sept. 1996 Joseph Beagan also recalls his family telling of a James Beagan, who was a ships carpenter from NFND, being forced with the rest of a crew aboard a schooner to lay over for the winter in Monaghan’s Shipyard, than located near the current Johnson’s River bridge. The rest of his story is similar to Alvin’s but he adds; “ In 1967 or so while working in the maintance dept of St. Dunstan’s University I was approached by a group of 10 or so young students who heard there was a Beagan working there and were happy to find someone on PEI from Newfoundland. I told them I wasn’t from Newfoundland and lived but 10 miles from here and they were very dissapointed since being so homesick they assumed any Beagan would have to by related to their Beagan neighbors at home in NfND.” As Joe recalls they were from Briggis, Conception Bay, NFND. As a further note Joe recalls his brother Tom once telling him he was once hitch-hiking from Montreal to PEI and was offered a ride in Nova Scotia by some Beagan’s on their way home to Newfoundland.
The petition below , undated in the archives, may be dated thru use of the records of the General Assembly at the Coles building if anyone is so inclined to do the work. I believe it had to be after 1840 for my man Beagan is not known to be on the Island before that date and he was dead by 1860
To The Honorable House of Assembly of Prince Edward Island in General Assembly convened
The humble petition of the inhabitants of Charlotte Town and the vicinity.
Showeth
That your petitioners be leave humbly to present to this Honorable House the practice now adopted of granting what are called shop licenses to sundry individuals in the town authorizing them to retail Spirituous Liquors who are at the same time not obliged to provide any accommodation whatever for the Public-
The frequency of Drunken men being turned out of those licensed shops into the street at a late hour of the NIght and at all seasons of the year, render them libel to the most serious accidents and many would inevitably perish if some of the humane inhabitants were not to admit them unto their houses.-
Your petitioners humbly beg leave to submit to this Honorable House whether it would not tend much to the Benefit of the Public in general, if those who took out Shop Licenses were compelled to keep every necessary entertainment for man and horse.
And your Petitioners will ever Pray

1841 Census of lot 36 records Patrick Martin, shoemaker, between James Callaghan and Henry Halligan. However next to his name is "Beagan P". I used to think this was Brogan but Pat Brogan has been on his farm for at least 6 years at the time of the census. If it is Pat Beagan's vitals than there were 1 male under 16, 2 males between 16 and 45, 2 females under 16 and 2 females 16 to 45. the land has not been developed and they own just 1 hog. Martin later shows up in the July 13, 1846 "The undersigned electors of the Second District of Queen"s County apparently on land later owned by John Beagan jr.
So this P. Beagan is probably the "relative" he wintered over with. Or perhaps a brother? There is a Terrence Carroll across the road in Lakes Map
Feb 8, 1844 The Palladium reports the defeat of Mr. LeLacheur for 2nd Queen's district and implys it was partly because of J. S. McDonald hiring bullies to keep the vote down and threating those behind in their lease. Jame Brogan appears to have been LeLacheur's campaign manager in the area. The same issue reports an act to place a bounty on bears has been filed.

Nov. 29, 1848 Census of Charlottetown records a John Bigaon, laborer, with one male under 16, one male 16 to 45, three females under 16 and one female 16 to 45. All are Catholic, three born in Ireland and two in PEI. Appears to be page 57 or 59, a few pages before the end of the first section. It is a stretch to say this is John Beagan but I have seen worse spellings.

October,1860 Commissioners map of lots 35, 36, 37 and 48 show for the first time the property of John Beagan of lot 37. He is boarded on the North by James Fitssimmons Jn. and on the South by a unnamed Boylan. One lot further South is owned by the Rev's James Brady. John's property eventually is owned by Owen and his wife , Ann Trainor which suggests that it was passed on by Owen's, supposed, father John Beagan. It also shows the property of John Bagan, the brother of Owen Beagan, on lot 35 in Donagh.///
